First Aid, CPR and Health Assessment

Unit Overview / Details

This unit examines emergencies in health care setting and teaches first responder approaches including first aid, cardiopulmonary resusciatation and other basic patient assessment. Students will learn the skills required to perform CPR on adults, children, and infants, as well as learn and be certified in standard first aid.  Students will also learn how to perform a basic health assessment, and learn best methods for exchanging information.  Finally, students will learn about the anatomy and common disorders of the circulatory system.

Content / Concepts

  • Recognize breathing and heart emergencies
  • Carry out rescue breathing, assist in choking, carry out one-person CPR and two person CPR
  • Explore the anatomy of the circulatory system
  • Carry out a primary assessment
  • Carry out an injury/illness assessment
  • Methods for control of bleeding and s hock management
  • Determine best treatments for injuries to muscles, bones, and joints; sudden illnesses, burn care, lifting and moving techniques, and bandage techniques
  • Identify appropriate c ommunication techniques in an emergency situation

Lessons in this Unit

  • In this lesson students will learn to identify and provide the appropriate care and treatment  of a patient exposed to excessive heat or cold.  By the end of this lesson students will be able to state the ways in which the human body maintains proper temperature regulation and the causes and stages of heat and cold injuries.
