Lessons in this Unit

  • Who should determine what is ethical? Who should determine what is really legal? If it is legal is it automatically ethical? If it is ethical is it automatically legal? Can ethical and legal standards be changed...

This lesson is intended to introduce the accepted norm of the basic concepts of these terms.  However, I also intend to pull from the students THEIR beliefs, so that they  are not afraid to challenge what they might be feeling.  Often times in the field of medicine a person is asked to make difficult choices.  Should a patient who is dying from an incurable horribly painful form of brain cancer be "assisted" to bring the end  a little sooner for humanities sake....would that be wrong?  would that be eithical?  This is the time to get these young people to start forming ideas that they can live with, that they can defend.  Not when the problem is staring them in the face.  Decisions such as I just presented should never be made as a 'knee jerk' reaction I feel.
