Unit Overview / Details
This unit includes the use of hand tools used in a basic Metals 1/2 course. It will also include power hand tools such as portable bandsaws, grinders/sanders, air tools, and cutoff saws. The unit broadens its scope by including power machines, such as, ironworkers, drill presses, lathes, milling machines, pipe benders, and horizontal bandsaws.

Lessons in this Unit

This lesson/project is designed as an introduction to metal working using basic hand and power tools. It also provides students with an introduction into safety, materials handling and appropriate shop behavior. Students will produce a small metal hammer out of recycled materials. Students will demonstrate accurate measurement and layout procedures, make threads with a tap and die, demonstrate proper hand filing and polishing techniques. The hammer will be used on the student’s next project.- One class period
