Part of Course: Metals 1 and 2 Model
Unit Overview / Details
Forging is the shaping of metal using localized compressive
forces. Forging is often classified according to the temperature at
which it is performed: '"cold," "warm," or "hot" forging. Forged
parts can range in weight from less than a kilogram to 170 metric
tons. Forged parts usually require further processing to
achieve a finished part.
This unit will include student projects which are hand forged
and finished. It will also include the theory of heat
treatment and safety in the forging process. The proper use
of tools and the use of a forge furnace will also be
explored.
