SMAW -Shielded Metal Arc Welding

Unit Overview / Details

The Shielded Metal Arc Welding process (SMAW), commonly referred to as stick welding, derives the heat for welding from an electric arc established between a consumable stick electrode and the part to be welded. The stick electrode is clamped in an electrode holder which is connected to the stick welder by a power cable. The current produced by the stick welder for welding can AC or DC, depending on the model.

Content / Concepts

  • To be able to use and understand the standard and non-standard welding terms and definitions commonly used by welding professionals.
  • To be able to use Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) to produce quality welds based on an understanding of its method of operation, equipment and application to the welding of steel.
  • To be able to perform Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) applications safely, with knowledge of related hazards and precautions.
  • To be able to properly and safely set up Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) equipment and also properly and safely prepare for welding.
  • To be able to produce quality single-pass fillet welds in the horizontal position using E60xx and E70xx electrodes.
  • To be able to produce quality multi-pass fillet welds in the horizontal position using E60xx and E70xx electrodes.

  • This lesson will teach beginning welding students how to set up the SMAW welding machine, how to strike an arc, how to maintain the arc,and finally various techniques for manipulating the rod to reach the desired outcome of weld bead.

    This lesson takes students over the concepts of the Shielded Metal Arc Welding.  It gives a general overview of what this process does, safety issues related to this process, electrical principles, equipment and electrodes.  This gives the framework for beginning welders or a refresher for those who have not welded with the SMAW process for a while. 

    General shop safety needs to be covered prior to this lesson (refer to general safety unit).  Students will have the ability to begin working with these tools almost immediately, once the instructor has begun demonstrating the process.  After this lesson students will be able to move on to striking an arc and running stringer beads.

  • This is my introductory lesson to electrodes. We identify different types of electrodes, introduce vocabulary terms, identify different diameters of electrodes, tensil strength and learn introductory machine settings based upon the electrode being used.
