Part of Lesson Plan: Cold Metal Project Layout and Transfer
Activity Overview / Details
Setup: Place an example of the sheet metal dustpan in the front
of the room and cover it so it can not be seen by the other
students. Hand out a piece of blank paper to each student.
Instructions: In a moment I am going to reveal a three
dimensional object to you. As soon as that project is revealed,
your challenge is to draw an accurate one dimensional picture of
the the object. This object was made out of one piece of metal and
the object of your drawing should be to show what it looked like
before it was folded.
What questions do you have? You have min.
After min call time and have a few students share their
drawings. (It is not critical that the students finish the drawings
the key point is that they understand that it is challenging to
look at a three dimensional object and draw it in one dimension.)
Next reveal the accurate drawing and have them compare there
picture to the official drawing. Tell them that the goal of today
is to learn how to accurately layout and transfer sheet metal
projects and that by the end of the lesson they will be able to
create an accurate replica of this project on paper and three
dimensionally.
