Activity Overview / Details
Break the class into 4 or 5 groups as they enter the classroom. Tell the students that in their groups they will be doing a task today and they can only get the materials needed from me (the teacher) and they can't use other groups materials. Now tell the students that they need to draw a color picture of a mountain seen with trees, a river and a bright sun! What do you need? The students will ask for paper, blue pens, green pens etc. As the students ask for the proper materials give them the wrong color pens or tell them that you don't know what that is, or could you please explain that to me? As the frustration mounts stop the assignment and discuss the activity. Ask the students what went wrong? What relevance does this have to the real world? Would this have been easier if we all new exactly what you needed? Say, "A job always goes better if we speak a common 'tool language'". (Listen for the student responses). Need to know the name of the tool. Need the right tool. Need to know how to use the right tool. Today we are going to learn about some common electrical wiring tools and equipment as well as their function.
