Activity Overview / Details
Have the students with their table partner make predictions on which joint will be the strongest in a tension test. Explain to the students that the nailed joint will fail first, then the screws, and finally the glued joint will fail. If you have the ability you can demonstrate this with a large spring scale and a come along, or a hydraulic press with a pressure gauge.
