Ingredients vs. Products

Part of Lesson Plan: It's Not Easy Being Green!

Activity Overview / Details

Who will be my volunteer? Thanks __________! On the board, draw the shape of a brownie box for us. Now, (ask class) what items make up the recipe shown on the back of the box? (Elicit response eggs, oil, water, brownie mix) Awesome! Let's give snaps to ________ for being our artist. As we look at our brownie box, how can we categorize those items? Right, they are called INGREDIENTS. Once we mix the ingredients together, we put them in the oven. 40 minutes later, the timer beeps, we open the oven door, and what do we remove? Oh yeah . . . warm gooey brownies -- the PRODUCT. Now, let's transfer what we know about making brownies to the process of photosynthesis. When I say "go", turn to face the person sitting next to you. Determine who will assume the role of "Baker" and who will be the "Taste Tester". Once you have made that distinction, return your attention to me. You have 3 seconds. "GO!" Bakers, say "Get out of my kitchen!" Taste Testers say "Yum, Yum!" Awesome! Ok, so now the fun part! When you hear "Let's Bake", the baker will list the 3 ingredients of photosynthesis and then the taste tester will list the 2 products. You will have 7 seconds. "Let's Bake" (count down last 5 seconds -- and 5, 4, 3, 2, 1) Who will be the first to share? (sharing occurs) Awesome job!! We now have the ingredients and products of photosynthesis fresh in our minds. The question is . . . what happens in the oven from the time the ingredients go in and the product comes out? Hum. . . interesting. When I say "GO", you will have 5 seconds to get two things on your desk -- your notes worksheet and a writing tool. "GO!"
