- 1 Hour
Standards
California Career and Technical Education Standards
Objectives and Goals
- Students will be able to identify a minimum of three websites dealing with small engines
- Students will navigate through each website and download one source of information (i.e. - Operators Manual, Illustrated Parts Manual, Repair Manual)
Activities in this Lesson
- What is technology - Hooks / Set
Operator Manual for a given piece of equipment. Ask the question, "How many of you go with your parents to purchase a piece of equipment/new car etc?" Ask the question, "Whats the 1st thing you do when you get it home?" Most will say they start it up in most cases the operators manual is on the table/shelve/ or in a file somewhere and only when something goes wrong do they go looking for it. So what can you do if that important booklet or paper goes missing and you need to know what to do with your engine? Most manufactures have entered the technology era and have developed web sites to assist you with this problem.
Focus the students search for information to gas powered Lawn and Garden Equipment (Leaf Blowers, Edgers, Rototillers, Chainsaws, Generators, Lawnmowers, Weedeaters, etc.) Get a couple of adds from the newspaper and/or sales adds and have the students look through and find an item they would be interested in getting more info. Another approach is to have it as a take home assignment to go home and find a piece of lawn and garden equipment and using the attached worksheet have them get the information and bring it into class using the form you have provided. (NOTE the form is on a half sheet of paper the master is setup to get two forms per page when you duplicate it)
- Equipment Info. Sheet [ Download ] Worksheet for students to use as a guide to get the necessary information for the piece of equipment that they want to look up information on via the computer
- Computer Usage-Web Search - Demo / Modeling
If you have the ability walk the students through a search via LCD Projector and a computer. Use a search engine and type in the manufacture's name and type of equipment. This should give you a listing of web sites. Then proceed to the website and go through the items on the handout that you will be giving them to use to help guide them through the web site.
- Web Site Locations for Dealers [ Download ] This is a list of various manufacturers web sites for the Modeling Activity
Now that you have modeled to the students what is expected of them, give them the attached worksheet and have them explore the site for the piece of equipment they have selected and answer the questions. Once they have finished, have them save the operators/instruction manual onto their documents and exit the internet. Once the students have finished, have them open the operators/instruction manual and see if there is a page that gives them the the names of the parts located on the piece of the equipment they selected. If so have them print the page number where it is located for the next activity,
