Plumb Bob Project

Part of Lesson Plan: THE PLUMB BOB - LESSON NUMBER FIVE

Activity Overview / Details

Students will enter the lab each day to find a lathe set for demonstrating the plumb bob procedures, facing and center drilling.  After a short oral review and demo the class moves to a second lathe set up for the next procedure, angle cuts.   Each lab day after these two basic demos the teacher will show the next two steps from the plumb bob worksheet. on the lathes.  After demonstrating  how to make the cuts on the lathe, students are paired up and set out to work on their own lathe.  Student will begin and continue the final project - - the plumb bob.

Remember to stress these lathe safety points.

MAKE SURE THAT THE INSTRUCTOR CHECKS EACH STEP!
1. Make sure that there is stock in the chuck. Make sure the chuck jaws are tight.   Never run a chuck with the jaws empty, they can open up when the machine is turned on and fly out! (INSTRUCTOR CHECK)
2. Check to make sure that your machine is set to a speed of about 800 RPM. Faster speeds may cause damage to you or the machine! (INSTRUCTOR CHECK)
3. Practice turning the lathe on and off. Make sure the chuck is rotating towards you. Always stand to the right side of the chuck while running the lathe. Objects flying out of the chuck will not hit you in this position. (INSTRUCTOR CHECK)
