Ask students with a show of hands how many of have experienced the following:
Clenching
Grinding
Headaches
Tired jaws
Instruct students to take a blank sheet, teacher demonstrates and instruction is given. Hold sheet vertically and fold in half to create an orgamy. On the right side they will write down foods to avoid to prevent jaw soreness. Group students of four.
Set timer for one minute and have groups begin discussion. When timer goes off engage a discussion of the foods noted and discuss how they might have an impact to the temporomandibular joint.
Teacher could ask the following questions to continue interest and maintain students engaged to the lesson:
What area did you feel the pain?
How long did the pain/discomfort last?
Did you have to take over the counter meds?
Have students write foods that were not noted on their list on the opposite side of the orgamy.
Instruct students to reference the following examples showcased in their textbooks (Textbook Torres and Erhlich Modern Dental Assisting, Ninth Edition),Page 104 Figure 9-11 and Figure 9-12. see attached documents.
The next lesson will broaden students understanding of the TMJ function and anatomy.
