Historical Arch bridges vs Modern Arch bridges

Part of Lesson Plan: Bridge Building concepts/ Design: Arch bridges part 2 of 4

Activity Overview / Details

Students will compare arch bridges built by Romans to more modern arch bridges.  Students will look at a slide of a Roman built arch bridge and then look at the slides of more modern arch bridges.  Have students raise their hand to point out similarities and differences in all the bridges.  Key areas to emphasize are building materials used.  Romans used mostly stone to build arches vs modern arch bridges are made of a combination of concrete and steel or only steel. Another key point should be many arches over a distance vs one large arch.
