Muscle Striations

Part of Lesson Plan: Introduction to Human Anatomy and Terminology

Activity Overview / Details

We will now focus back to our MANIKEN models and learn the purpose of striations on our muscles. Instruct them to place STRIATIONS (lines) in the clay from the origin of the muscle to the insertion point. In Slide # 20 I will tell them " REMEMBER THAT EACH STRAND IN THIS MUSCLE REPRESENTS A MUSCLE FIBER OR CELL. NOTICE THAT EACH FIBER IS PARALLEL WITH OTHER SO THAT THEY CAN WORK TO 'PULL' IN THE SAME DIRECTION. THE ARRANGEMENT OF MUSCLE FIBERS IS KNOWN AS STRIATIONS OR FIBER DIRECTION IN A MUSCLE. BODYBUILDERS (LIKE MYSELF) REFER TO THEM AS 'CUTS' IN THE MUSCLE.  NOW USE A CLAY TOOL TO PLACE LINES IN EACH OF THE CLAY MUSCLES THAT  YOU HAVE ALREADY BUILT TO REPRESENT THE FIBER DIRECTION THAT IT WOULD HAVE. *MUSCLE STRIATIONS/FIBER DIRECTION POINT TO ATTACHMENTS AND SHOW DIRECTION OF PULL*"
