Need for herbicides
Part of Lesson Plan: Bioprospecting and Herbicide Development
Activity Overview / Details
Discuss with students why herbicides are necessary. Solicit from class how weeds compete with food crops for various resources (e.g. water, nutrients, light). Describe impact of traditional herbicides on wildlife. Also important to stress the demand on subsistence farmers who may spend 50% of their time and energy weeding.
In regard to other approaches to herbicide development this could be a good time to also discuss genetically modified foods such as RoundUp Ready and BT crops.
