- Ketchup Emergency - Hooks / Set
Once students are seated in class, I take one student outside and place fake blood (ketchup) over his forearm ( I choose the last person in the room).
I open and slam classroom door 3 times, then enter the room yelling "Jimmy" got his arm stuck in the door and he is bleeding. I walk "Jimmy" all over the room, looking for help and spreading a small amount of ketchup on a few desks around the room.
- Biohazard Protocols - Lecture
Once the classroom has cleaned up and settled we discuss what just happened and if it was the right or wrong way to react to the emergency situation. Then discussion is focused on the following questions written on the whiteboard from the prior assigned reading. Students are to write questions are correct responses into lecture noteworkbooks.
What is a biohazard?
Why is blood hazardous?
What does the term "bloodborne" mean?
What diseases are we most worried about?
Who makes biohazard laws?
Who do those laws cover?
What tools do we need in sports medicine to protect medical personel and other athletes from a biohazard spill?
What should be done with bloody bandages and other biohazardous material?
What is an open wound?
The following graph is written on the whiteboard, students are to copy into workbook lecture notes.

- Open Wounds Identification and Treatment Abrasion - Demo / Modeling
Using a dry erase marker, an abrasion is drawn and covered in ketchup on a student volunteer. Appropriate treatment biohazard protocols, identification and treatment is demostrated. Students are informed that at the end of the unit they will be able to appropriately treat and identify 5 different wounds.

- Open Wounds Identification and Treatment Abrasion - Lab / Shop
Using workbook labs, students will draw and cover in ketchup on four different partners. The students will identify, clean, and treat using appropriate biohazard protocols.

- Open Wounds Identification and Treatment Abrasion - Assessment
Instructor will casually observe students performing appropriate icleaning, identification and treatment of abrasions. Instuctor will "sign off" labs book when student has completed four procedures correctly.

While the student being evaluated turns his back, I draw one of the five open wounds on his partner's forearm using the dry erase marker and cover in ketchup. The student is to clean, identify and treat the wound using appropriate biohazard proticols. The students are to retake evaluation until a passing level of achievement is demostrated.
