Lesson Plan Overview / Details

This lesson is used as a capstone experience to pull together information learned by students in my Introduction and Advanced Sports Medicine Classes.  The first semester class studies are focused on anatomy, immediate care and therapeutic modalities.  In the second semester student focus is on diagnosic, evaluation and advanced therapy skill sets.  In this lesson students will join together to perform  Medical History, Differential Diagnosis, VIPPIRONE Evaluation, Diagnosis and Treatment Plan of an ankle injury.

Lesson Time

1 period
60 Minutes

Objectives and Goals

In this lesson students will join together to perform Medical History, Differential Diagnosis, VIPPIRONE Evaluation, Diagnosis and Treatment Plan of an ankle injury.

Activities in this Lesson

  • Ankle Evaluation - Hooks / Set

    Instructor~

"OK, lets put everything together that we know about the ankle."

the following medical notes/abbreviations are written on the white board.

    (See Attachments)

The note/abbreviations are written in each students workbook.  Students are aware and understand each procedure from previous study over the last two semesters.  One student is selected as a medical note taker and will write results and findings on the board.  Another student is selected as the patient and is given a script.  The script includes responses to questions and reactions to special tests.  From the remaining students, each is selected by instructor to perform one or two procedures in the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment.  All students are expected to write clinical notes in their workbook and lend assistance to selected student if there is difficulty in performing a skill.

  • Medical History - Group Work

One student is selected to perform a medical history.  Simulated patient will answer questions based on script, note taker writes responses on white board and each student writes responses in his/her workbook.

  • At this time instructor will lead discussion on possible diagnosis of the injury based on medical history, mechanism of injury and at risk populations studied during last two semesters.  With student discussion a list of 5 possible are developed and numbered based on priority.

    (differential diagnosis attached)

  • Medical Exam - Group Work

Selected students are picked to perform one or two parts of the medical exam( 10-15 students will participate in this section).  Patient reacts/describes findings based on script.  Note taker writes results of each test or finding on the white board.  Students are expected to write responses in their workbooks and assist selected student if necessary.  Most time is focused on orthopedic test performance and results.

  • Diagnosis - Lecture

Instructor lead discussion allows students to develop a diagnosis as a group.  Students that performed research on specific injuries are expected to argue for inclusion or exclusion for their diagnosis based on medical history and physical examination.  A consciences is achieved and a diagnosis is proclaimed

  • For each stage of injury healing a script has been prepared for the patient.  A selected student is chosen to perform a SOAP evaluation.  Through class discussion appropriate treatments for each stage and finding are developed.  Another selected student will perform the appropriate treatments.  Note taker will write notes on white board, students will write notes in workbook and offer assistance when needed.
