Objectives and Goals
Students will prepare and stain cheek cells to observe under compound microscope
Activities in this Lesson
- Introduction to Microbiology - Lecture
- Preparation of bacterial smear - Demo / Modeling
Show the students how to do a bacterial smear, and observe under a microscope. Students will try it a few times. This will be a pre lab for gram staining.
- Wrap-up - Closure
Follow safety procedures to discard microscope slides and cover slips into broken glass containers
Tooth picks used for smearing bacterial should be discarded in biohazard waste
Security officers will check the lab stations for any violations

Assessment
Repeat preparing wet mounts and staining of cheek cells - students will be allowed to do it multiple times until the slides are good.
Grade on the quality of the slides after repeated trials
