The students will improve their communication skills by learning how to define and build medical words.
Activities in this Lesson
- Combining medical word elements - Hooks / Set
As the students walk into the room, a variety of word roots, suffixes, and prefixes will be projected on the whiteboard, see worksheet. The students will be instructed to create five medical terms and define each. After ten minutes, randomly call on five-ten students to share one of the medical terms they built. At the end of the activity, they will turn their papers in.
- Medical Terminology power point - Lecture
The students will take note on the power point presention on Basic elements of a medical word. They will use their notes on the next two activities in this lesson. They will also turn their notes in when this unit is complete.
- Understanding Medical Word Elements - Group Work
The students will work with a partner and complete the worksheet on understanding medical word elements. They can use their notes from the power point if needed. Students will turn in when completed.
- homework - Assessment
The students will complete the worksheet on defining medical words. This will be turned in on the following day.
