Summary - Basic electricity skills are essential to any ag mechanics program. To aid the students in developing their wiring skills, a class set of circuit boards is very helpful. Those teachers teaching electricity for the first time may not have these devices and can take the opportunity to make the construction of circuit boards a class project.
This lesson will take the students through the process of constructing a circuit board and to learn how the placement of enclosures and devices (ie. switches, outlets) relate to residential construction and wiring. Students will learn basic code requirements as well.
Included in this lesson will be diagrams and step-by-step instructions on how to put the circuit boards together.

Objectives and Goals
- The goal of this project is for the students to construct a class set of wiring circuit boards to be used in the future as a training aid for developing basic electrical wiring skills.
- Students will understand how to install residential wiring enclosures on wood framing material and to identify and differentiate between various enclosures.
Activities in this Lesson
- Rough Electrical - Introduction - Hooks / Set
As students prepare for class, a brief power point will be displaying pictures of residential rough electrical settings on the front screen. To introduce the project/lesson, begin a discussion of what the students see in the slides. Direct the discussion to what skills would be required to perform the work seen in the slide show, and how would the students be able to learn those skills.
What training aids would help the students learn basic wiring skills? What vocabulary and materials would the students need to know?
Introduce the project that the students will be constructing.

- Project Overview & Demonstrations - Demo / Modeling
In this section you will review the instructions and project materials with the students. Use the "Circuit Board - Assembly Instructions" power point to review the instructions for constructing this project. Also, use the "Student Packet" to help the students to follow along and to take notes from the power point. There is a student worksheet included in the student packet that will bring out importatn details in the instructions.
- Circuit Board-Assembly Instructions - Compressed.ppt [ Download ] This power point presentation will take the student through the steps to construct this project. There are pictures of an actual project being constructed which should help the students understand the assembly sequence.
- Project - Elect Wiring Cir Boards-Student Packet [ Download ] This packet includes the instructions for assembly, a picture of what the finished product should look like, and a student worksheet that the students should fill out. The worksheet is suitable to use as a graded assignment at the end of this section.
- Electrical Wiring Circuit Board - Assembly - Lab / Shop
At this point the students are ready to enter the shop to begin construction on the circuit boards. Supply a set of plans to each student. The plans contain pertinent information such as instructions, materials used, and tools needed to complete the project.
Also, give some thought to how you will channel your students through the shop. This will depend on the availability of tools, work bench space, and traffic patterns. A recommendation would be to set up stations so you can spread the students out and utilize your tools more effectively.
- Clean-up - Closure
At the end of each Lab/Shop session have prepared some sort of an organized clean-up routine.
Things to consider are:
1. Accounting for and putting away tools.
2. Storage of materials and supplies till the next Lab/Shop session.
3. Storage of finished projects.
4. Clean-up of the shop (ie. sweeping).
Recommendation: Since this project will take 3 or 4 Lab/Shop sessions, split the class into 3 or 4 groups and assign each group to complete one of the items on the list above and rotate the groups each day.
- Project Options - Other
During the 2010 CATA Curricular Code meeting for the Ag Mechanics CDE, a recommendation was approved that made a change in the Electrical Wiring Skills area of the contest. Teams will now have to provide their own electrical wiring circuit boards in order to compete in the Electrical Wiring Skills area. I have included here a copy of the recommendation as well as a copy of the materials list and plans for the new "regulation" board.
If you plan to coach an Ag Mechanics team, you may consider constructing this style of board.
