Tell students that the beetle-resistant potato plant has been created through genetic engineering technology. Use the attached powerpoint to review what genetic engineering means and briefly touch on the benefits and controversies surrounding this topic.

Genetic Engineering is a powerful tool of biotechnology. It has contributed to many great advancements in food science that have benfited humanity. But as scientists we have to ask not only "can we do this" but "should we do this" and weigh the pros and cons.
