Activity Overview / Details

Divide the class into two groups. Those who think seeds should be patented, and those that do not.

For the group that agrees with patenting: 

If ownership of DNA will give some companies “excessive power over something that is vital for everyone.” What solutions can they find to prevent the control of the food supply by major corporations

For the group that does not agree with patenting:

 If companies are not allowed to patent their developments, “future innovations that could benefit the world will be thwarted.” What solutions do they propose to ensure that these biotechnological discoveries can be funded and are profitable.
