Part of Lesson Plan: Leadership Styles
Activity Overview / Details
Ask the class the following questions:
"How did this go?"
"What came easy with this assignment?"
"What was challenging about this assignment?"
Great. This closely mirrors real life examples when you are in a leadership role working with other people who have different styles. Today's lesson will help us look at our own style and get us thinking about how we can best work with people of different styles.
Ask: What do we mean by the term leadership styles? (Everyone has different personalities, ways of interacting, ways of getting things done).
Ask: Why will it be helpful to learn about leadership styles? (We can work better together, accomplish more, etc.)
Great. We're going to really dive into this notion of leadership styles by doing a personal assessment. (Distribute test).
Walk them through the first parts of the test- make sure everyone knows how to complete it.
Have everyone complete the test and then score themselves according to the scoring rubric.
Then, split up the class so that all primarily "even" people are on one side and all primarily "odd" are on another. Anyone who is in between should still choose a side.
Have each group brainstorm 5 attributes/qualities/adjectives that describe their style OR give them a tear sheet and have them draw a symbol that represents their style.
Share out their work with the rest of the class.
Next, have them come up with 3 challenges others might have when working with their style.
Share out.
Have them partner up with someone of the opposite style. Have them work together to each brainstorm something they can do to work with someone of the opposite style. They should bounce ideas off one another, share opinions and ideas.
Suggest they ask each other the following series of questions:
1. How can someone like me (describe their style), work with you?
2. What are two strategies you would suggest for someone to work with you?
3. What is the best way to deal with you and your style when you are stressed?
4. What makes you feel successful? How can someone like me help you get there?
Share out with the rest of the class.
