Part of Lesson Plan: Product Placement

Activity Overview / Details

Give another example of misplaced products (like the "Everybody Hates Chris" example)- A poster in the hall of the show "Glee" that advertises the "San Francisco Ballet performance for Christmas with tickets available in the student store!" (Glee students live in Ohio) or the American Idol set that currently has product-placed Coca-Cola on their show having one of the contestants holding a bottle of Gatorade.

Show video clip of American Idol & 30 Rock product placements:

The 30 Rock and American Idol videos are extreme examples of product placement.  They are obvious and get the attention of the audience for the advertized product.

Students will partner with the person next to them, and come up with one scenario where a product placement wouldn't work. Describe the scene and how the product would not fit in.  Then describe a product and how the placed product might fit into what's happening in the scene.  (same scene as the first)  They must describe why the product placement would work and with what age group, income level, interest (sports, books, etc.), the product placement scenario fills.

One person will be the recorder and the other person will be the speaker.  This activity will become their lesson assessment.
