Objectives and Goals
- ~Students will identify a career of their choice, present and analyze the requirements to pursue said career.
- ~Students will understand the career and know the requirements for education and training.
- ~Students will use critical thinking skills, writing skills, presentation skills.
- ~Students will understand trends both past, present and future in their chosen career field.
- ~Students will set career goals and form a plan to reach those goals.
Activities in this Lesson
- Hook Activity - Other
Students will be given a 3 X 5 card as they walk into the classroom.
Ask each student to write down “What they want to be when they grow up.” They may write down from 1 – 3 possible careers.
Teacher will lead a brief discussion asking students to share their answers and perhaps why they want to be…….
- Lecturing Activity - Lecture
Teacher will introduce the concept that career development is a life-long learning process that combines career, work and life.
Relate to the students that their interests are one of the first things to identify when they begin planning for a career. Having a job that they enjoy is how they will stay motivated and succeed in their career.
Teacher will explain to students they will be given an opportunity to explore their interests through an on-line interest inventory and be able to investigate the careers they most closely match.
After they have had this on-line experience each student will research one career. Then they will have the choice to either write about their career choice, do an oral presentation or invite a professional to speak about that career.
Teacher will ask the students to be thinking about what career they may want to research as they complete the interest inventory.
- Demonstration of Web Site - Demo / Modeling
Teacher will direct students to access the following web site:

Teacher may project the website to help explain the process.
Students will begin with the “Assess Yourself” section. This will take about 5 minutes.
Students will then be directed to complete the “Interest Profiler” section. This will take approximately 30 minutes. It is available in 4 languages: English, Spanish, Vietnamese and Chinese.
Teacher should be aware students may not understand all the questions and be available to walk around the room helping students as needed.
At the conclusion of this section students will be asked to save their inventory to their own profile or to write down each interest and the corresponding score in white.
Then the students should be instructed to click on the “Show Jobs” button and review the jobs which seem to best match their interests. Students may write down on their 3 x 5 card the highest scored careers suggested in the occupations section.
- Checking for Understanding - Check Understanding
As the class period ends teacher asks students to compare the careers they wrote on their 3 x 5 card to the careers which appeared in the interest inventory. Ask them…” Are you surprised by the results?” “Has this exercise helped you think of alternative careers, or has it reinforced what you already have decided you want to be “when you grow up?
- Assignment of Career Report - Projects
Teacher will then pass out Career Report Guidelines and review the assignment step by step with the students.
Teacher will revise Guideline dates to fit into their semester schedule.
Teacher may give students time in class to work on their report, or may assign it as homework. A rough draft may be required and a specific date of completion must be clearly defined. (See Career Report Guidelines)

- Closure Activity - Closure
After all presentations, and reports have been completed, ask students to do a quick write describing in one paragraph what was most valuable to them in the process and why or why not they want to continue to pursue the occupation they researched and reported.
- Assessment - Assessment
Each student will provide evidence of proficiency by one of the following:
- Written Career Report of at least 1000 words.
- Illustrated Oral Report (May use a Power Point Presentation or other Visual Aides)
- Interview a Professional and arrange for she/he to speak to the class about their occupation.
- Rubric for Career Report [ Download ] A scoring tool that lists the criteria for the Career Report.
