Activity #2
Part of Lesson Plan: My Candy's Better Than Yours!
Activity Overview / Details
Place students into groups of 2 or 3. Give each group one wrapped candy of different varieties.
- Teacher asks: List what catches their eye about the
packaging:
ex. Color, words, shapes. - Teacher asks: What age group is the candy trying to sell to?
ex. old, young, under 5, between 18-25, over 50 - Teacher asks: Is there a specific geographical area, income, or gender the candy is trying to sell to?
- Then the teacher asks the students to unwrap the candy:
Teacher asks: Describe what they like about the candy itself:
Example: taste, texture, smell, feel, shape.
Then explain that this is what is called a target market.
Explain that some of the examples they gave are exactly what advertisers are looking for in order to sell their products. Then explain that at the end of this lesson, they will be creating a candy bar that will be sold to the rest of the class in a commercial.
