Part of Unit: Adobe PhotoShop CS
Lesson Plan Overview / Details
The two basic methods you can use to make selections are using a tool or using color. It is important to become familiar with the different selection options, so you can determine which one will work best for the task at hand. Students will learn how to look at images and evaluate selection opportunities and figure out which tool will work best for the chosen image. In this lesson the magnetic tools will be covered. Other selection tools will be covered in future lessons.

Objectives and Goals
To explore and learn selection tools available in today's technology to be in the creation of digital composites.
Activities in this Lesson
- Anticipatory Set & Discussion - Hooks / Set
At the beginning of class show an image on the LCD Projector with an item selected with a marquee surrounding the shape.
What is the nickname for the dots around the shape?
Have students guess.
The correct answer is: Marching Ants. This is because the dots within the marquee appear to be moving.
- Lecturing - Lecture
Look at the images you saved for your digital composite project.
- How are we going to move the animals, buildings, people, equipment and vehicles to your selected background?
- Do they have a solid background?
- Are they a solid color?
- Are they round or square?
These are the questions you need to answer to choose the correct selection tool to move the individual images to your digital composition.
There are various selection techniques we can use: Marquee Tools, Lasso Tools, Color Range, Magic Wand and Quick Selection Tool.
We are going to learn how to use the marquee tools to make selections. Photoshop selection tools make it easy to select objects that are rectangular or elliptical. Unfortunately, not all objects fall into those two categories. We are focusing on those that do fit into those categories.
To select an object by shape you do the following:
- Click the rectangular or elliptical marquee tool on the tool panel.
- Drag the pointer around the object.

Elliptical Marquee Tool- Creates elliptical selection. Press Shift while dragging to create a circle.
Fastening Point-an anchor within the marquee.
Guides-Non-printing horizontal and vertical lines that you can display on top of an image to help you position a selection.
Marquee-a series of dotted lines around the selected area.
Rectangular Marquee Tool-Creates a rectangular selection. Press Shift while dragging to create a square.
Single Column Marquee-Creates a 1 pixel-wide column selection.
Single Row Marquee-Creates a 1 pixel-wide row selection.
- Demonstration/Modeling - Demo / Modeling
On a LCD Projector, demonstrate to the class how to access the various marquee tools in Photoshop and how to change from one shape to another.
Explain how to select an object by shape:
- Click the rectangular or elliptical marquee tool on the tool panel.
- Drag the pointer around the object.

You might feel that making selections at first is difficult or tedious. Making selections is a skill that takes practice to perfect and to become proficient at. When making selection be sure you are comfortable in your work area, that your hands are steady, that you are zoomed in on the image, and that your mouse is working well. A dirty mouse will make is more difficult to get an accurate selection.
- Go online to morguefile.com and browse for a picture of the sun that will match you background. We are using the sun because it is a circle. Download the image.
- Select the Elliptical Marquee tool and hold down the shift key while selecting the sun. If you are not satisfied with your selection, click select menu and deselect. Once you are satisfied with your selection.
- Click copy, open your background image, and paste on new layer.
- Click the Edit Menu, select Transform and Scale.
- Scale image to fit proportionate to other objects on your background.
- Select the Move Tool on the Tools Panel and move to chosen location.
- Name new layer: Sun
