Correcting Blemishes & Smoothing Wrinkles

Looking forward to a big event and on the day of the event, you wake up with a zit on your chin?  No worries with Photoshop’s Spot Healing Brush—blemishes can be forever laid to rest .  Pictures of your special day or event can be improved from good to gorgeous.

Use Photoshop tools to correct blemishes and smooth wrinkles. Lesson includes a PowerPoint presentation,  Lecture Notes, Photoshop source file, student lab activity worksheet, an assessment activity as well as three videos files, all about 3 to 5 minutes long.  The videos demonstrate the following Photoshop tools:

  • Spot Healing Brush
  • Healing Brush
  • Blur Tool
  • Eye Dropper Tool
  • Brush Tool

This lesson could easily be combined with sociology, anthropology, health or history lessons and/or how America is obsessed with youth and beauty.  This lesson could also easily tie in to a discussion about self esteem, makeup, skin care, weight issues and the rising number of cosmetic surgical procedures and their associated health costs and risks.  Historically, we could compare some of great beauties of the past such as Helen of Troy and Cleopatra with what is considered beautiful by today’s standards.

Objectives and Goals

  • Students will be able to use Photoshop tools to improve a portrait by removing blemishes and wrinkles.
  • Students will be able to use the Spot Healing Brush, Healing Brush, Blur, Eye Dropper and Brush tools at the conclusion of the lesson.

  • Introduction - Hooks / Set

    Print and/or display "Before and After Photo Montage" for viewing as students enter the classroom.

    • Before After Photo Montage [ View Image ] [ Download Original ] This is an introductory image showing before and after photo correction.
  • Lecture/Demonstration - Lecture

    Project/present the 14 slide PowerPoint presentation.  The beginning slides are before and after photographs of some famous celebrities.  The ending slides briefly show the tools used in the video files.

    Series of 3 videos that demonstrate the tools the students will use in the lab activity. Each video (mp4 format) is approx. 3 to 5 minutes in length.

  • Lab Activity - Lab / Shop

    Students open the Photoshop file "teen.psd" and follow the steps on the activity worksheet.

    Student activity worksheet is in both a Word and PDF file formats.

    An assessment portion is included on the worksheet which requires a digital photo or a scanned image for blemish and/or wrinkle correction.  The before and after images can be saved to student portfolios.
