Introduction to Memory- What is RAM?

Part of Unit: Personal Computers and Components

Lesson Plan Overview / Details

This lesson is an introduction to computer memory called RAM.

Lesson Time

Lesson
50 Minutes

Standards

Objectives and Goals

  • Understand RAM and the place of memory in a computer
  • Be able to identify the different specs for memory
  • Understand how memory is addressed and accessed

Activities in this Lesson

  • Price Out - Hooks / Set

    NOTE TO TEACHER:

Students in class know that they should look at my digital whiteboard upon entering class for any instructions for the day

I found this memory as current in Feb 2011.  After 6 months, you may want to find a more current memory.  I used http://www.cdwg.com for my images and price info

I also place an old memory chip in an old motherboard at each of the student's desks for them to handle and look over.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When students enter the class, they will see a picute of a 4GB DDR3 RAM chip on the whiteboard with a short description of the RAM and the instructions:

    This picture is of Memory with the specs 2x2 4GB - DIMM 240-pin - DDR3 - 10.66 MHz / PC3-8500

Find me the best price for this chip from any manufacturer.

    On a Word document list:

    1. The name of the manufacturer and specs of the chip

    2. The place you found to sell the chip, the price, and the link to the page.

    3. Save the document in the Drop Box and in your Documents folder (The Drop Box is a location on our server where students can save digital assignments)

  • What is RAM? - Lecture

At this point, show a 3 1/3 minute video on a description of RAM and how it is used for storing information while the computer is running.

After the video is finished, lead a discussion about the video.  This is a part of a check for understanding.  The students should know:

    1. What Random Access Memory is used for

    2. A basic understanding of how Random Access Memory finds information

    3. A little bit about how much memory has evolved.

  • What do the RAM specs mean? - Guided Practice

Switch back to the image of the RAM chips and the specs:  2x2 4GB - DIMM 240-pin - DDR3 - 10.66 MHz / PC3-8500.  Take each specification and discuss its meaning.

    2 x 2 4GB = 2 modules 2GB each that make a 4GB pair

DIMM 240 pin = Dual Inline Memory Module with 240 total pins

DDR3 = Double Data Rate 3.  Higher bandwidth (up to 1600 mb/s) than DDR2 at low power consumption (1.5 volts)

    10.66 mHz/PC3-8500 =
