• Victim Handling During a Rescue - Hooks / Set

  Students will be shown a slide show of dramatic rescue pictures.

  They will then begin a short writing prompt identifying what the pictures had in common, what some of the differences were, and what difficulties can be identified.

  Prompt: How many of you would know how to successfully move an average size adult in an emergency situation? 

  Pose a question to the students for them to answer as a writing prompt:  How easily do you think it would be to move a classmate out of an emergency situation? 

  Student Challenge:  Choose a student who thinks they can successfully remove a victim and another student of average size to be the victim.  Instruct the victim to offer no help or resistance to the rescuer.  The rescuer student will typically find it difficult to remove the victim without the knowledge and use of proper techniques. 

  I would expect the students to overestimate their ability to successfully move an average person more than a few feet.    

  Pass out an article about a rescue to give the students some sort of reference and realism.

• Victim Handling and Removal - Lecture - Lecture

  Discuss with the students situations when you might need to use one of the following victim removal techniques:

  Incline Drag

  Webbing Drag

  Blanket Drag

  Cradle in arms carry

  Seat lift/carry method

  Extremities lift/carry method

  Chair lift/carry method

• Victim Handling and Removal - Modeling - Demo / Modeling

  Teacher Modeling:

  Model for the students: the importance of following a wall,  the importance of identifying potential safety hazards, the importance of body positioning, the importance of identifying emergency exits, how to properly carry a victim out using various methods.

  Students should:

  Working in pairs will be able to actively converse about all topics and ask appropriate questions. 
• Victim Handling and Removal - Check - Check Understanding

  Working in small groups students will be shown various pictures of possible entrapments and should be able to identify potential hazards.

  Students should be able to verbalize the goals and considerations associated with victim removal.

  Students will be able to quickly summarize the significance of each type of victim removal technique.  This will require student critical thinking by taking all factors into consideration. 
• Victim Handling and Removal - Practice - Guided Practice

  The teacher will show a short video clip for each victim removal skill.  After the clip the students will practice/demonstrate the skill.  The instructor will observe the groups and check for proper technique and understanding.  The assessment forms would be a good teaching resource at this point. 

  Students will work in groups of three to practice the various victim removal techniques.  They will get into preassigned groups and watch a short video clip of one of the techniques.  Then they will take turns practicing with their group.  They will need to rotate as the victim so that every student has an opportunity to sucessfully practice the skill. 

  Once the students are comfortable with the skill and have practice adequately the next video should be played and the process repeated.

• Victim Handling and Removal - Assessment - Assessment

  A practical examination will be given.  A scoring scale will be used for each student: 

  Students will work in pairs.  Students will be given orders at the door of a given structure and given search orders to conduct a primary search.  They will need to identify all hazards and communicate appropriately.  The goal of the exercise is to locate a victim and safely remove them in a timed exercise.  Students will need to properly assess the situation by use of face to face communication and radio communication.  Students will need to make decisions regarding self safety and patient safety.   Students may need to answer some questions verbally.
