Students will recognize and properly load, pull, and deploy a cross lay hose load that uses shoulder/hand loops

  • Students will properly load a crosslay flat load with pull loops

Activities in this Lesson

  • When a fire occurs, it is essential that water be applied a quickly as possible to reduce the spread.

In this lesson, we will look at how to properly and efficiently pull a hose from the hosebed so we don't look like these guys.

    • Cluster of hose on the ground [ Watch Video ] [ Download Original Video ] This video shows how improperly loaded or pulled hose load creates a delay for firefighters when they need to start a fire attack
  • This PowerPoint demonstrate how the hose is pulled from the bed by placing arms through the loops, grabbing the nozzle, turning and pulling the hose to the attack point.

  • Actually Pulling/Loading the Hose - Independent Practice

This is the practical portion of the class.  Before loading the hose, it will need to be pulled.  Then reloaded, then repeated, over and over so all students complete pulling the hose and participate in loading the hose.

First, have three students get on top of the engine and open the hosebed cover, and one student on each running board to hold the folds and pass the hose up.

Next, set up a roation for the rest of the class where they pull the hose to its full length, then drag the nozzle and parking lot folds back to the engine.  The student who just pulled, should stand on the ground and pass the hose to the running board student.  Upon completing the load, the student who just pulled, replaces the student on the running board, the student on the running board goes topside and replaces the nearest student loader, that person "bumps" the center person, who bumps the furthest who replaces the other running board student.  This keeps each student busy and involves six students at one time.

  • Quality Check - Check Understanding

After each hose load, the instructor and students check the hose load for the following:

    Tight, staggered folds of hose

Placement of loops at the one third and two thirds points as indicated by counting the folds of the hose

Placement of the nozzle just inside of hose folds with nozzle end pointing out in direction of pull

Assessment

Assessment Types:
Demonstrations,

Students will demonstrate each position of pulling the hose without prompting and then participate in loading the hose from each position.
