Direct Hands On Instruction

Part of Lesson Plan: Stopping Motion In Photos (Short Exposure)

Activity Overview / Details

15 minutes

With cameras in hand, explain the role of shutter speed in controlling movement in an image.  Students should be taught that each speed is one part of a second.  For example 1/100 is 100th of a second.  If necessary have a digital stop watch (or one on the computer) demonstrate the length of time.

Special attention should be directed to the concept of leading the subject with the camera to increase, especially in high speed situations.  Use the selected student images from the Hook to punctuate the lecture and highlight fast shutter speed and how camera movement helps a photographer capture not only the action but the meaning behind the action.
