As students enter I wait for them to take a seat and then call their attention to a shop dilemna that I would like them to address. Asking students to follow me with their notebooks, I walk them to one of our shop project tables and proceed to take a finished project, that I explain took 17 hours of class time work to produce, and proceed to place it in the vice and secure it firmly then remove it, which of course, leaves a number of nasty divets and abrasions in the surface of the project. I ask students to return to class and in groups of two, brainstorm potential solutions to our issue for 5 minutes and record them in their notes while I take roll.
