Part of Lesson Plan: Job or Career?? What do you want?
Activity Overview / Details
I have 7 tables with 5 students at each table so you would need to prep 7 sets of notecards. Once you do it once you will have them from year to year.
If you wanted to do a set for each student you can just write 10-15 careers on the cards and each stack could be different.
Or... if you don't want to make the cards, have the students fold a piece of paper in 16 squares and have them list jobs related to the industry and have them make their own cards and then group them.
Have a list of jobs and careers on notecards and have the students group the cards in anyway they want. A list of ideas are as follows:
Server Cashier Barista Nutritionist Food Scientist Food taster
Caterer Busboy Dishwasher Cook Sous Chef Pastry Chef Master Chef
Dietician Food stylist Food Photographer Baker
I have attached a list of careers as a word document.
Once students have grouped the cards, ask them how they grouped them? What categories did they decide to group them in?
Ask them "Did anyone group them in job or career? Did anyone group them in amount of schooling? Did anyone group them in jobs you like and dislike?"
Also ask the students if any of the careers or jobs listed are ones they don't know and discuss which each job is.
Example - Barista- someone who works at a coffee shop making coffee.
Server - Waiter or Waitress
Food Stylist - Someone who makes food look good to take pictures of.
