Part of Lesson Plan: How To Build a Carcase For A Euro Style Cabinet (Night Stand)

Activity Overview / Details

When the students enter the room there will be a slide show presentation of various cabinet projects built in the class as well as my own projects that I have built over my teaching profession. Projects will consist of Salinas Valley Fair Projects and other cabinets built for the community.

Give the students a piece of paper and have them number the paper 1-20. There will a total of 20 projects for them to rate. Give each project a number. Have the students start with the first project as number 1 and continue through number 20.

The rating system is as follows:

5- best overall quality;

4- good quality;

3- average quality;        

2- below average quality;

1- low quality

After you show all of the cabinets and the students and you have judged them, show the class the winners and why they have been chosen as the best cabinet.

Tell students: "In this unit you too will be able to build a functional and beautiful cabinet"

Have the students take notes. (Cornell Notes)

Discuss with the students what makes a good cabinet in design and quality.

Discuss with students the average cost (hourly rate) of cabinetmakers in your area and how much money can be made building cabinets.

I have designed this project as a community service project, but you can choose to have them do this as a personal project they will receive praise not only from the teacher but friends and family as well.
