Tools Scavanger Hunt
Part of Lesson Plan: The Cook's Tools
Activity Overview / Details
This activity begins when the students enter the room. Quickly place the students in working groups of three or four people, give them a tools list and direct them to a kitchen area. Start your scavenger hunt game explanation as soon as the bell rings. The students have 30 seconds to find the first three items on the tools list. Tell the kids to have the items displayed on the counter and to raise their hands when they have found the items. (Not every item will be correct) The first team to find all three correct items will receive a reward. (I usually give a few points of extra credit) After a group has successfully located the first three items, have everyone return their tools to where they found them and direct them to the next set of three tools and so on until you have completed the list or see that the students are waning in enthusiasm. Close this activity by asking students what part made the hunt difficult and what made it easier. I usually ask what made the winning team able to find the items so easily. Lead the discussion toward the idea that knowing the correct name for each tool and what it looks like makes the difference. Collect the lists and have the students take their seats.
