Activity Overview / Details
After the holes are drilled it is time to split the block apart. Students need to be sure they have marked all guide lines for cutting and filing.
Place a chisel, as close to the center of the project, on the joint of the 2 blocks, and hit it firmly with a mallet. This should split it into the 2 original pieces.
Using a back saw, crosscut saw or even a coping saw, cut the 2 angles in the back of the project.
Using a rasp, show students how to file the cuts to remove the tool marks left from the saw. Go over the rasp area with a finer file such as cabinet file to remove the tool marks from the rasp.
File the front radius to create a gentle curve where the tips come together. Students should still have the clothes pin given to them when the drawing began, they can look at it as a reference and guide.
NO sanding is being done at this point. Students need to learn to use the files to remove tool marks.
