Part of Lesson Plan: Food Preparation Terms
Activity Overview / Details
(Time: 1 50-minute period)
This activity can be used on the first day back to class (I use the first day of the second semester with my Foods B students) with kids who are already familiar with many food preparation terms. As students finish unscrambling list of words, they begin finding definitions in their text books (or whatever source you use for terms) while others finish up with opening activity. The unscramble is the first exposure to the list of words.
Once most students have unscrambled all that they can, we have a class discussion going down the list of words. Students raise their hands to say what the word is, then they define it if possible, or someone else can jump in. Teacher fills in gaps with necessary information.
Students are NOT to write the definitions as students define them, as the quiz is made from the definitions they find in their text, as I want them to be familiar with that specific wording. This is a quick overview of the terms, their second exposure to the terms.
(Teacher Note: I use the text book Foods for Today by Johnson & Wales. The terms that I use in the unscramble and quiz, and their definitions come straight from the text. I suggest you adapt the list to whatever text/resource you use in class to make this activity more relevant to your term list.
In the event that your text does not have what you are looking for, there is a great website that you can download food prep term list from, as well as have the students play games on it - called scatter. Web site is www.quizlet.com/subject/food-prep/ I don't have student computers or I would change over to these terms as the games would be a fun way for the students to learn.)
