    • Resume worksheet [ Download ] Resume worksheet, personal info, education, work exp, etc
  • Before the students enter the room place these two questions on the front board or projector for the students to answer when the video is played.

What did you think of Richard's advise?

What if you followed his tips?

If you want a stronger, more effective resume, take some notes!

Employers are impressed with people who look and act like they want a job.

Guess what, you might get a job!

    • Resume Richard [ Go to Site ] How not to do a resume- 3 minutes
  • Show power point.

    Stop at:

Activity #1 (group work-write a 30 second ad), have students share.

    • Power point -dos and don'ts of resume writing [ Download ] null
  • Give students resume #1, in groups have them discuss what they liked and disliked about the resume.

Give students resume #2 (new and improved version), now what is their impression of the old resume?

Have students give their answers aloud and put them on the board under the headings: Poor to okay resume              Good resume

    • Example of poor resume [ Download ] Resume #1
    • Better Resume [ Download ] Resume #2
  • This section tends to be one of the hardest for young people. Either they do not have much experience, or discount what experience they do have.

If this is a ROP class, ask students what kind of experience they have had at their internships, describe using action terms. Make a list on the board. If this is hard for them, give them some suggestions, ie-balanced till with no errors, welded bead with control, etc.

Give them a model for this area. One way to do this is the following, (you may show them other ways also)

Gina's Art Store, 1234 Main Street, Chalupo, CA 98999                   10/2011 to present

    Gina Mason, Owner                                                                                             415-234-3344

Duties: Excellent customer service (awarded top sales person August 2011), balanced till with 100% accuracy, processed new shipment, trained new ROP students

Another area for brainstorming would be:

Skills:  Word Processing, Excel, CPR/First Aid, ServeSafe, xxxxx accreditation, etc

Second language is huge here, note if fluent in English and ________ both written and oral is applicable. Example

References should not be their best bros, they need to be adults who know about their character and work ethic.

  • Using the resume worksheet, have students write a rough draft of the resume, either handwritten or on the computer.

Each student must get 2 people to do peer evaluations, this shows other students different styles of resumes and help them start looking at resumes more critically.

    • Then pass out a more polished resume. See attached #2.
    • Which one would probably get more positive results.
    • Resume_Worksheet.xls [ Download ] This is a form for students to gather information to use on their resume
    • Creating_the_effective_resume.rtf [ Download ] This is for the teacher, the power point is based on this information.
    • Key_Resume_Words.doc [ Download ] just in case you want to hand it out
