Unit Overview / Details

The lessons in this unit include identifying the major parts of a suspension system, describing the basic function of each suspension system component, explaining the operation of the four common types of springs, comparing the various types of suspension systems. Tire size and dimensions, steering angles including camber, caster, toe, toe-in & toe-out on turns, and SAI will be included.

  • Hydraulic and power assist systems
  • Brakes (disc, drum, antilock) diagnosis, service and repair
  • Steering and suspension system diagnosis, service and repair
  • Automatic and manual transmission and transaxel function and operation
  • Selecting appropriate wheels and tires for vehicles (tire and rim sizing)
  • Under-vehicle system maintenance, diagnosis, service and repair

Lessons in this Unit

  • This lesson includes the inspection and servicing of strut and shock suspensions.

  • The instructor will demonstrate safe and effective techniques of tire changing (mounting and dismounting) using a tire machine. At the end of the lesson students will demonstrate knowledge of tire changing, specifically theory, key terms and most of the steps required.

  • Students will practice tire dismounting and mounting using a tire changing machine in the lab. The instructor will perform guided practice during the lab. At the end of the lesson,  students will demonstrate knowledge and proficiency regarding the theory, key terms and techniques of using a tire changing machine.

  • Lifting vehicles is an industry standard in automotive repair facilities worldwide. Putting a vehicle to working height is a procedure that usually precludes an auto repair procedure. In this lesson, the dangers associated with lifting a car are explored. Safety is emphasized and taught at all phases of this lesson to avoid injury or death. Damage to the lifts or vehicles is secondary, but very important to avoid as part of the development of relevant career skills. Knowing what is or is not a safe lift is also important. This is part of the lesson so that students are informed about manufacturing standards and certification in the lift industry.

  • This lesson will review safe proper tire and rim assembly removal and replacement. It is extremely critical for the instructor to emphasize safety in all of the activities performed. Personal and group safety will be emphasized. Students will use a variety of hand and power tools and will be working on live vehicles. Students will learn about the foot/pound torque wrench and its measurement system used to correctly tighten wheel lug nuts.

  • Students will be introduced to the different types of steering systems and how they affect a vehicle’s weight, performance and handling. Students will also learn the components specific to the vehicle’s steering system and how they operate.

  • Students will be introduced to the different types of suspension systems and how they affect a vehicle’s weight, performance and handling. Students will also learn the components specific to each type of vehicle, its suspension system, and how it operates.

  • Students will be introduced to the 5 alignment angles and how they affect a vehicle’s performance and handling. Students will also learn the components specific to the vehicle’s alignment and how they are adjusted.

  • Students will show how to properly set up the tire balancer, place the tire on the balancer and operate the tire balancer ensuring a properly balanced tire.
