Fire extinguisher

Part of Lesson Plan: **How to use a dry chemical fire extinguisher (updated) by Ramon C. Iniguez

Activity Overview / Details

The lecture:

  1. Explain the fire triangle and that a fire needs all three parts to start.
  2. Go over the four classes of fire.

a. Give some examples of materials of each class of fire, then ask the student to give examples of their own for each class.

b. Give scenarios of fires and have the students identify what class of fire it is.

Example:

i. A bag of clothing catches on fire:  Students should respond with Class-A fire

ii. A pan of used oil,: Students should respond with Class-B fire.

iii. Etc.

3. Discuss the importance of storing flammable materials in their proper storage locker and of storing used shop rags in the proper container to minimize the risk of fires. Also discuss the importance of good housekeeping and disposal of trash on a regular basis to reduce the risk of fire.

4. Talk about the importance of the monthly inspection of the fire extinguisher. Explain that a fire extinguisher hanging on the wall is not very effective if it loses its pressure or if its damaged or obstructed.

5. Use the acronym PASS to help the students remember the steps to use the fire extinguisher.

Pull the pin

Aim at the base of the fire

Squeeze the handle to discharge the dry chemical

Sweep side to side until the fire is extinguished or you gain a clear path to escape.

Note: Remind students to take a position up-wind of the fire if possible, and not to get too close to the fire.

6. Use personal experience you may have had with fires or fire extinguishers.
