Part of Unit: Green Concepts
Lesson Plan Overview / Details
This lesson will explore the use of alternative ("green technology") fuel options.
Times
- Classroom/Lab
- 2 Days
Standards
California Career and Technical Education Standards
- T.C.C3.4 Understand the applications of alternative power sources.
- T.FS.11.0 Demonstration and Application
California Academic Content Standards (Reinforced)
Objectives/Goals
Students will learn green technologies such as hybrids, electric, hydrogen fuel cell, electric, photovoltaic & bio diesel applications.
Activities in this Lesson
- What !!! No more tiger in the tank - Hooks / Set
Students will discuss what are some alternative possibilities of powering our vehicles, now that using fossil fuel is less attractive due to the costs.
- Hybrid Vehicles - Lecture
I will show a sign on the overhead screen of an exploded view of a Toyota Hybrid car. Students will then diagram the system on paper.
- Electric Car - Demo / Modeling
I will demonstrate the components of an electric toy car. Then let the class will explore the concept through manipulation.
- Hydrogen Fuel Cell - Lab / Shop
I will go through the instructions and the steps in detail for assembling a hydrogen fuel cell model with the students. While they follow along, reading the steps, they will begin to assemble their own hydrogen fuel cell model. They will check off the steps that are documented on the worksheet that is included in the model kit. I will allow the students to follow along and monitor their progress. When they have completed the model, I will have the students measure the output voltage with a multimeter.
- Photovoltaic - Demo / Modeling
I will discuss with the students on how to assemble a photovoltaic panel and controller. The students will follow along and assemble their own photovoltaic panel & controller. I will explain the what the voltages are that they can expect and how and where to connect the leads from the multimeter to help guide them in the right direction. Students will take notes during this session to use as a reference during their project.
When they have completed the controller, I will have the students measure the voltage & amperage to a car battery and record their findings clearly and legibly on a repair order following the BAR state standards. I will stress the need to work safely while wearing the proper personal protective equipment.
- Bio Diesel / Group work - Closure
I will discuss the procedures of how to make a batch of bio diesel from waste fry oil. They will utilize litmus paper & titration of the PH to determine if it is cost-effective to continue making the bio diesel.
At the closure of this session, I will place the students into small groups and open the session for discussion to make that determination. This will allow the students to use their research information, critical thinking, problem solving and teamwork skills to determine this.
Assessment
- Assessment Types:
- Observations,
Teacher will ensure that students work safely and monitor their progress during lecture and lab. Teacher will anser any questions that may arise during the class and assist the students when necessary.
