Part of Lesson Plan: **Wheel removal and replacement (updated) by Robin Coyne

Activity Overview / Details

Instructor will model safe jacking procedures and setting jack stands at the correct support positions to safely raise one axle.

Lift points will be discussed and lifting points will be shown to the students. The lift capacity of the jack will be verified by checking the load capacity label on the jack.

The use of the jack  for lifting and lowering the vehicle wil be explained and demonstrated. Slow deliberate actions will be emphasized in carefully operating the hydraulic floor jack.

Placement of jack stands will be demonstrated and explained in terms of stability and safety.  The instructor will demonstrate lowering the car by turning the jack handle SLOWLY to the left. Some students will tighten the handle first, then twist it to the left abruptly because it is tight now. Explain this and verify that students know how to not do this to avoid undue stress of having the vehicle bang down on the jack stands.

Students will observe the demonstrations while they record the correct procedures in their journals.
