How to convert time in minutes into dollars

Part of Lesson Plan: **Labor Time vs Labor Dollars (updated) by John Potter

Activity Overview / Details

Material needed Worksheet handout, calculator if needed, scratch paper and pencil.

Instructor will pass out a worksheet on labor asking the question, "How much money would you make per hour if you work for minimum wage?"

I put the minimum wage on the board and have the students to answer the following questions.  "How much would you make in 2 hours? How much would you make in 1 1/2 hours?"

When the students have figured it out, I ask the same question using hour and minutes: 1 hour; 1 hour 30 minutes; 2 hours. Then I ask, how many minutes in 2 hours?

I then show them the Labor Time Powerpoint and have the students start to figure out the math by adding up time in minutes or multiply a set amount by time in minutes.  Then I have them add the minutes up and convert them to hours using division. They take the labor rate per hour and multiply it by the time in hour. to get the dollar amount.
