Activity Overview / Details

In the lab I have a Honda Civic with a mechanical valve train.  I have tightened the intake valve on cylinder 1 and the exhaust valve on cylinder 4.  The engine has a cylinder head gasket which has failed between cylinders 2 and 3.  I also have a Nissan with two cylinders leaking to the cooling system and a Ford with normal compression. 

Students break up into their work groups and are given a compression tester, a cylinder leakage tester and blank repair order forms.  They are tasked with performing compression tests to determine the affected cylinders and leakage tests to determine the failed components.  On the normal engine they doccument compression and determine that all cylinders are within 10 percent of each other.
