Metals 1 and 2 CORE provides students with an understanding of manufacturing processes and systems common to careers in machine tool and materials forming industries. Topics include the interpretation and layout of machined and formed-part prints; the cutting, shaping, fastening, and finishing of machine tools; and casting, forging, molding, cold forming, and shearing processes.

  • This unit includes health and safety policies, procedures, regulations and practices.  It also will have lessons on safely using equipment and the safe handling of hazardous materials.

  • This unit addresses the procedures used in a Metals Class that deal with first day lab orientation, clean-up , locker assignments and seating charts.

  • This unit includes converting blueprints into shop drawings, determining project requirements, developing and completing layout patterns, layout, measurement, marking dimensions and referencing lines on materials. The unit will also include the safe and proper use of layout tools.when used for sheet metal and machine tool operations.

  • This unit includes basic measurement lessons that teach students to successfully read measuring devices such as, rulers, measuring tapes, micrometers, and venier calipers.

  • This unit includes sheet metal processes and sheet metal characteristics.  The lessons include safety procedures, planning , layout,  and construction of small projects that teach basic operation of hand tools and sheet metal equipment.

  • Metalurgy is the study of the properties and characteristics of metals.  Lessons in the unit will explore the cause and effects of oxidation on metal, what types of metal are best used for products based on functionality and quality.

  • This unit includes the use of hand tools used in a basic Metals 1/2 course.  It will also include power hand tools such as portable bandsaws, grinders/sanders, air tools, and cutoff saws.  The unit broadens its scope by including power machines, such as, ironworkers, drill presses, lathes, milling machines, pipe benders, and horizontal bandsaws.

  • This unit includes the identification, proper use and selection of mechanical fasteners used in the maufacturing industry.  These will include types of screws, nuts/bolts, rivets, and new and emerging fasteners.

  • This unit includes the safe and proper use of oxyfuel welding/cutting processes and equipment. The theory and practical uses for oxyfuel welding and cutting processes will also be included along with career exploration in the field.

  • This unit will include the safe and proper use of welding processes and equipment used in electric arc welding.  The processes will include SMAW, GMAW, TGAW, and FCAW welding in the Metals 1/2 lab setting.
    The unit may include set-up and maintenance of all the above mentioned arc welding processes.

  • This unit includes plasma cutting as a process that is used to cut steel and other metals of different thicknesses (or sometimes other materials) using a plasma torch. In this unit the proper and safe use of a plasma cutting machine will be taught as well as the theory and practical uses for the machine in the manufacturing industry.

  • This unit includes finishing processes and materials used in industry and in the high school manufacturing lab.  Lessons taught will emphasize the proper and safe use of finishing tools and materials and matching the correct process for the required product.

  • Forging is the shaping of metal using localized compressive forces. Forging is often classified according to the temperature at which it is performed: '"cold," "warm," or "hot" forging. Forged parts can range in weight from less than a kilogram to 170 metric tons.  Forged parts usually require further processing to achieve a finished part.

    This unit will include student projects which are hand forged and finished.  It will also include the theory of heat treatment and safety in the forging process.  The proper use of tools and the use of a forge furnace will also be
    explored.

  • The unit on foundry will include the safety procedures involved in pouring metal and constructing a workable mold from a pattern.  The lessons will further investigate the theory of mold design and the many products that are cast in the foundry industry.

  • Students will learn to make effective decisions, use career information, and manage personal career plans in the Machine and Forming Technology Area.
