Dimensioning

Part of Course: Engineering Design I Model

Unit Overview / Details

This unit includes lessons on the standard practices of proper dimensioning,  techniques, and applications for engineering design drawings and projects will be covered.  The application of the alphabet of lines (board drafting emphasis) and linetypes (CAD) will be covered.  Dimensioning systems in addition to chain dimensioning will be presented.  A lesson on the addition of general notes to working drawings is included.

Lessons in this Unit

  • This lesson is for a Basic Engineering Design class that will allow students to place dimensions onto a drawing or design properly as per industry and classroom standards.

    Total Lesson Time
    45 - 90 Minutes
  • This lesson will allow follow up to the initial Good Dimensioning Technique assignment. This second assignment has students add all Dimension, Extension, Leaders, Center Lines and Text to a completed drawing. Students will add the items needed for the completion of the assignment according to the rules of the handout " Good Dimensioning Techniques".

    Total Lesson Time
    45 - 55 Minutes

  • In this lesson drafting students will be able to apply practical applications of dimensioning systems beyond the standard method of applying of chain dimensioning to a technical drawing.   They will develop basic drawings using baseline dimensioning, datum dimensioning, and rectangular ordinate dimensioning.  They are required to convert a drawing from the chain dimensioning system to the baseline dimensioning system and to complete two additional drawings using datum and ordinate dimensioning application.

2 class periods - Each Period
    55 Minutes
  • This lesson is designed to show students that there is more information needed about the part that they have drawn and this information is referred to as General Notes.

Level 1 drafters do not include general notes on their drawings. Level 2 or second semester drafting students will learn to add these notes to their drawings

    one class period
    57 Minutes
  • This lesson is designed for first year Engineering Design students.  The student will design an object that includes a variety of features such as a hole, an inclined surface, cylinders.
