Body Organization

Part of Unit: Anatomy and Physiology

Lesson Plan Overview / Details

Students will learn about the basics of human anatomy and physiology.  The students will explore cell structure, tissue types, and the systems of the body.

1 class period

Label
90 Minutes

Standards

California Career and Technical Education Standards

California Academic Content Standards (Reinforced)

Students will use critical thinking skills to make decisions and solve problems related to body organization.

Activities in this Lesson

  • Divide the class into small groups of 4-6 students.  Give each group the four basic properties of life and the definitions, see worksheet.  The group will then list at least  two examples of how we use/show each property of life and  then discuss whether each property applies to any other entity besides living organims.  After 10 minutes, each group will share out their findings.

  • The students will take notes on Body Organization Terminology.  The notes will be turned in at the end of the unit for points.  After the students take notes on the power point, they will individually complete a worksheet to assess their knowledge of the terminology presented.

  • The students will take notes on Body Organization Anatomy.  The students will turn in their notes at the end of the unit.  We will discuss the power point as a whole class.

  • Have the students work with a partner a assign them one of the five levels in which body structure is organized into.  Have each small group list at least five examples of body structures at their level and the functions performed by their level.  Give them ten minutes to compile their list and then each group will share out.  See slides 5-6 from BO Anatomy power point.

  • Put the students in cooperative groups of 4 students in each group.  Each group will be required to make a poster of cell structure, clearly showing all 7 components.  The poster will need to include a description of the who, what , when, where,  and how of each of the 7 components within the cell.  This activity will be started in class, but will be finished as a homework assignment.  The groups will have one week to complete this assignment.

Assessment

Assessment Types:
homework

For homework, the students will develop a list of ten functions that a cell must perform.  They must also identify the cell structure that performs each function on their list.  The students may use their textbook and the notes they took in class.  See slide 6-9 on BO Anatomy power point.
