    Classroom
    3 - 5 Class Periods
  • Students will understand: what is a cover letter, how to write one and its importance in their career search.

    Time required
    2 - 3 Hours
  • Students will understand the importance of letters of recommendation, and how and who to ask for them. Many students ask teachers to write them a letter and by teaching them how to look at the job, look at themselves and see what qualities they possess they can write a stronger letter of recommendation. Many times the applicant knows more about themselves and the job than the person who is asked to write the letter. The student will send the letter electronically according to the specifitions of the teacher's letterhead.

    Classroom
    1 Class Period
  • Students will understand the different types of interviews, the purpose of an interview, typical questions, how to dress and present themselves at an interview.

    Classroom
    2 - 3 Class Periods
  • This lesson, which the students will complete over several days, will help them in preparing to compete in the FHA-HERO Competitive Recognition Event (CRE)  Job Application and Interview.  This lesson could be used in any of the areas of Home Economics Careers and Technology.  It also serves as a culminating project in a course.

The final product produced by students will be a Portfolio that would be used in the event.  I have often referred to this as a "Showcase of the Student's Best Work".  When that terminology is used, students take this very seriously and do a great job.  I have often had students contact me after graduation saying that the portfolio "helped me get the job".
