Ram Set Safety - Safe work habits - Safety on the job!

How to use a Ram Set in a safe manner. Students first must be taught to develop a safe attitude .

Safe work habits can be taught. The number one cause of accidents on the job are unsafe acts. If you can teach the students to think safety, we can help them to develop into safe workers. Teach them to always keep themselves and the work area clean.

To use a Ram Set on the job you MUST be certified to use the device. The Company (RAM SET) will issue you a certificate of completion card certifying you are trained properly in the use of the Ram Set.

Objectives and Goals

  • Students will, at the end of the lesson, understand the basic safety procedures and proper use of a Powder-Actuated Fastening system. The goal is to teach students to think safety first! Please note that some Power Actuated fastening system require a certified user card from the maker.
  • Students will learn how to use a Ram Set on the job and you MUST be certified to use the device. The Company (RAM SET) will issue you a certificate of completion card certifying you are trained properly in the use of the Ram Set.
  • Students will learn how to dress for the job, always use appropriate clothing for the job and the weather. Use approved personal protective equipment for your face, ears, eyes, head, and feet as applicable for the job.
  • Each student will understand the basic Safety protection for the RAM SET which include but are not limited to the following: 1. Ear protection. The ram set shoots off a charge equivalent to a 22 caliber gun. (A purple load is loud). 2. Eye protection. Always protect your eyes from flying debris and the discharge of the gun. 3. Foot wear. When shooting down sill plates it's a good idea to wear steel toed boots.

Teach students about the use and safe handling.

    • Ram Sets are used to nail down interior sill plates when framing residential housing tracts. Ram Sets shoot one shot and pin at a time. It is different from a other guns that can shoot multiple shots and pins in a row.
      • What is a Ram Set?
      • It is a powder actuated fastening tool. Ram Set is the brand name. Other types of powder actuated guns are made with different brand names.
      • When anchoring loads to wood/stealer walls to concrete slabs the Ram Set is a great tool as a powder actuated gun. It is a low velocity fasting system powered by gunpowder cartridges called "loads' or Boosters. They look just like a 22 cal. cartridge. The Pin or "nail" comes in different forms and configurations. A Ram Set can fasten items directly to steel or masonry
      • ****SAFETY TIP****When using a Powder charge, always use the recommended charge or size load for the job. The color chart provided with the tool gives the user a wide range of load charges based on the job. Loads for old concrete for example might be a purple load (the strongest), however using it in new concrete you would drive the pin too deep. A brown charge may work better. Not following the recommend procedures for proper use can cause injury.
      • Warning - A nail gun is a professional tool and not a play thing. Serious injury can occur if not used properly; it is not to be played with in any manner. Nails or pins can pierce a leg, hand, arm or cause injury to the eyes.  Always place the gun where it is to be used, never point it at anyone. Never put your finger on the trigger until ready for use.
      • OSHA   - OSHA requires operators of Powder actuated tools be qualified and certified by the manufacturer of the tool.  A certification card must be with you when using the tool.
      • BEWARE - DO not shoot a powder actuated tool into soft materials or materials that can be penetrated easy. The pin may pass through and become a bullet harming or killing someone.
      • Things to remember: Ram Set safety - Safe work habits - Safety on the job! Dress for the job, Always use appropriate clothing for the job and the weather. Use approved personal protective equipment for your face, ears, eyes, head, and feet as applicable for the job.

How to use a Powder-Acuated Fastening Tool

    Lesson Plan Overview / Details

Teach Students these 5 steps with an actual gun as an example of safe use.

    1. Wear the appropriate personal protective gear, to include eye protection, ear protection and hard hat.

    2. Feed the pin or stud into the piston of the gun.

    3. Feed the gunpowder cartridge (load) into the position.

    4. Position the tool in the front of the item to be fastened and press it against the mounting surface. The pressure releases the safety lock.

    5. Pull the trigger handle to fire the load charge.

    Safety and Maintenance

Teach these guideline to the students:

    A. Always wear the right protective gear.

    B. Do not use a powder acuated tool untill you are certified on the model you will be using.

    C. Follow the safety precautions in the manufacturers instruction manual.

    D. Use the proper size pin for the job you are doing.

    E. When loading the driver, put the pin in before you load the charge.

    F. Use the right size charge according to the manufacturer.

    G. Never hold the end of the barrel against any part of your body or cock the tool against your hand.

    H. Never hold your hand behind the material you are fastening.

    I.  Do not fire near the edge of concrete. Chips of concrete can fly off and harm you or others nearby.

    J. Never pry out the charge with a sharp object.

    Powder Actuated Fasteners

    SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

    IMPORTANT

No one should attempt to operate a Ramset TM Fastening Tool before reading the instruction manual. Careful study of the instructions for loading, firing and maintenance of the tool will enable you to obtain the best performance.

Every operator must be fully conversant with the Local or State Government Regulations governing the use of Powder-actuated (P.A.) Fastening Tools, in addition to holding the appropriate Accredited Operators Certificate where required. Ramset recommends instruction for all users of Ramset TM P.A. Fastening Tools.

To promote safe working conditions, the following safety precautions should be observed in the use of P.A. Fastening Tools.

    1. NEVER attempt to use your Ramset PA tool UNLESS you have satisfactorily completed authorized training and read the Instruction Manual.

    2. When not in use, the PA Tool should be placed, unloaded, in its box or case, which should then be shut, locked and stored in a safe place to which only authorized persons have access.

    3. ALWAYS follow the directions for care of the tool contained in this book. Special adaptors shall be fitted and used strictly in accordance with the instructions and in a manner such that the safety features of the tool are not adversely affected.

    4. ALWAYS display a suitable Authorized Warning Notice in such a manner as to be clearly visible to all persons who are at, or near, the place where a tool is being used. Such notice shall be in accordance with local Government Regulations.

    5. NEVER fire the tool UNLESS you and any other people in the area are wearing safety eye and hearing protection.

    6. NEVER let bystanders gather around when you are using a PA Tool.

    7. NEVER use a powder-actuated tool in the presence of any explosive or inflammable gas, dust or vapour, in an atmosphere which is compressed, or in any place where the power load may be unintentionally exploded or be rendered dangerous by the presence of heat.

    8. NEVER leave a tool unattended in a place where it would be available to unauthorized persons.

    9. NEVER load the tool until ready to fasten. The tool should not be loaded until immediately prior to its use. If it has been loaded but not put into immediate operation, it should be unloaded and not laid down or carried around in the loaded condition. Never load the tool at other than the place at which it is to be used, thus minimizing risk of unintentional firing.

    10. NEVER carry fasteners or other metal objects in the same pocket or package as power loads.

    11. ALWAYS check that the barrel is free from obstructions before loading.

    12. NEVER point the barrel of a loaded or unloaded tool towards any person. ALWAYS point the tool downwards and as far as practical away from the operator's body. This applies in particular where a power load that has misfired is being removed.

    13. NEVER place your hand over the muzzle with a power load in the tool.

14.Fasteners should not be driven into brick, concrete, or similar substances if:

    a) nearer than 75mm to an edge or

    b) the thickness of which is less than 100mm, or less than three times the shank penetration into the basic material, whichever is the lesser, or

    c) nearer than 150mm to where a former fastener has failed.

    15. Fasteners should not be driven into steel if; a. less than 4mm thick, unless, for fastening into thinner steel, the shank diameter of the fastener is less than the thickness of the steel or b. nearer than 12mm to an edge or hole.

    16. NEVER fasten into wood, fibreboard, plaster or other soft materials unless backed up by a material that will prevent the fastener from passing completely through. (Masonry or thick steel).

    17. NEVER fire fasteners into brittle or hard materials such as glazed brick or tile, terracotta, marble, granite, slate, glass or into hard steel. Do not attempt to fasten into high tensile steel, case iron, heat treated steel or pressurized vessels such as gas bottles, compressed air cylinders etc.

    18. NEVER attempt to fasten into a spalled area in masonry where a previous fastener has failed.

    19. Fasteners shall not be driven through existing holes unless the tool is specifically equipped by Ramset TM for accurate alignment of the barrel.

    20. DO NOT fire into material which dulls the point of a test fastener, when first tried by hand as a center punch.

    21. ALWAYS position your body comfortably in line with and behind the tool.

    22. ALWAYS make certain the tool is at right angles (90°) in both directions to the work surface before firing.

    23. NEVER fire tool at an angle to the work surface.

    24. NEVER use the tool at or near the extremities of your reach.

    25. IF A LOADED TOOL JAMS in the firing position, it should be locked in a secure place where no harm could result if it accidentally discharged. DO NOT attempt to make any adjustments to the tool.  Call your Ramset TM representative or supplier.

    26. IF A MISFIRE OCCURS, the tool should be kept firmly against the worksurface for a short time. Refer to the local PA Tool Regulations for the minimum delay time (Aust./NZ/SE Asia 10 secs/ UK 30 secs.)

    27. NEVER use Ramset TM Power Loads in firearms. They are much more powerful than ordinary ammunition and must be used only in powder-actuated tools.

    28. ALWAYS wear safety eye and hearing protection when using a PA Tool.
